Your Lowcountry Movement Specialist

What We Do...

Getting You Back In The Game And Life

As an athlete and active individual I am very familiar with the frustration and uncertainty of not being able to participate or perform in any of the activities that I enjoy. This was the case when I was dealing with chronic running related injuries more than 15 years ago. I had taken up running, particularly long distance running, and eventually became one of the ~80% of runners who suffer a running related injury. My experience with the medical field was disappointing. I was essentially told to stop doing the very thing I had come to love. As I continued to look for solutions, I arrived at a Physical Therapy office. The therapist listened to my concerns, worked with me to develop a plan to get me back to doing what I love, and I returned to pain-free running having now completed dozens of races of varying distances including 5 marathons.

My mission is to help others move better, feel better, and perform better. While it is important to rest at times while recovering from an injury, it is even more important to seek out ways to restore, maintain, and improve your physical abilities throughout your lifetime. Movement is important both on and off the field. As a movement specialist, I understand the importance identifying and addressing the root cause(s) of a physical issue. Once the cause is addressed, further knowledge regarding individual movement patterns, mobility, stability, and strength can be the most effective way to ensure that you stay active over your lifetime.

Who we are...

Matthew VanSlyke

Owner, Physical Therapist, Cert DN

Dr. Matt created VanSlyke Physical Therapy in order to offer a more holistic and individualized approach to helping people navigate pain, injury, and activity limitations.  I am dedicated to providing each client with a unique, individual plan and program.  As a multi-sport athlete one of the pinnacles of the work that I do is with helping athletes at all levels of play return to their sport post injury. This is done while ensuring an athlete's return to sport aims to reduce risk of re-injury that can occur with an incomplete rehab. Based on my own experience as an athlete having dealt with my own personal injuries, I understand the challenges faced by athletes, the importance of proper and efficient movement, and how help others take control of their own outcomes.

Prior to becoming a Physical Therapist, Dr. Matt earned his Bachelors and Masters of Science Degrees in Psychology from SUNY at Albany. He returned to college after his experience as a patient of Physical Therapy and went on to receive his Doctor of Physical Therapy Degree from The Sage Colleges in 2013.
